Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple on Jade Island. Evening: water puppet show at Thang Long Theatre, followed by dinner at a bia hoi (fresh-beer) stall.
Morning: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex, Presidential Palace grounds, One-Pillar Pagoda. Temple of Literature (Vietnam's first university, 1070 CE). Lunch at KOTO. Afternoon: French Quarter โ Opera House, St. Joseph's Cathedral, Hoa Lo Prison ('Hanoi Hilton') museum. Evening: Train Street coffee with the 7 PM train squeezing past.
3.5-hour drive east to Halong Bay. Board a traditional junk for an overnight cruise. Lunch on board as you slip between 1,600 limestone karst islands. Afternoon: Sung Sot (Surprising) Cave, kayaking or bamboo-boat rowing. Sunset cocktails on the sun deck, seafood dinner. Overnight anchored in a quiet bay.
Morning tai chi on deck, breakfast, short cave/beach visit. Return to Halong pier, drive to Hanoi airport, flight to Danang (DAD). Transfer 30 min south to Hoi An. Evening: walk the Ancient Town โ Japanese Covered Bridge (1590), Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, floating lanterns on the Thu Bon river. Dinner at Morning Glory or Mermaid restaurant.

Morning flight to HCMC (SGN). Afternoon: Reunification Palace (the tanks crashing through the gates in 1975 photo), Notre Dame Cathedral, Central Post Office, War Remnants Museum. Evening stroll along Nguyen Hue walking street, Bitexco Tower Sky Deck. Next morning flight home, or extend 2 nights for Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta.
