Pre-dawn climb up Sigiriya โ 1,200 steps up a 200-m monolith. See the frescoes of the sky maidens, the mirror wall, the lion-paws entry. Summit views at sunrise over the jungle. Descend before heat. Afternoon: Pidurangala Rock for the classic Sigiriya silhouette photo. Village tour โ tuk tuk ride, bullock cart, cooking lesson at a local home.
Morning: Polonnaruwa ancient city UNESCO by bicycle โ 12th-century capital, Gal Vihara rock-cut Buddhas. Lunch at Minneriya. Afternoon drive to Kandy (2.5 hrs). Evening: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (the Buddha's tooth, one of Buddhism's most sacred relics). Kandy cultural dance show.
Morning: Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens (the orchid house, avenue of royal palms). Drive south and up into the tea-country hills to Nuwara Eliya (6,200 ft, 'Little England'). Tea factory visit with tasting. Afternoon: Gregory Lake, Victoria Park. Evening by a fireplace in a colonial bungalow.
Morning: board the Nuwara Eliya-Ella train โ one of the world's most scenic rail journeys through tea gardens and misty mountains (Nine Arch Bridge). Arrive Ella. Lunch. Drive 3 hrs south to Yala. Check into a tent camp or safari lodge.
Pre-dawn jeep safari in Yala Block 1 โ Sri Lanka has the world's highest density of leopards. Also elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, sambhar. Breakfast in the park. Return to lodge. Drive west to the south coast โ Mirissa, Tangalle or Bentota. Sunset on the Indian Ocean.
Morning: Galle โ walk the ramparts of the 17th-century Dutch Fort UNESCO. Lighthouse, Dutch Reformed Church, boutique-lined Pedlar Street. Lunch at a fort-wall cafe. Afternoon transfer 3 hrs to Colombo airport for your flight home.
